Structure & Objectives

EKA is organized around the design team concept. Each team of engineers, designers and technicians is led by a senior engineer or project coordinator who has design, review and coordination responsibilities for the project. Support functions for the design teams are handled on a departmental basis. Each department is supervised by a professional with specialty experience in the named area and reviews each component of the work prior to releasing it to the design team for inclusion in the final product.

Project management objectives are to:

  • Ensure full client coordination throughout the performance of the project.
  • Provide a single point for communication and responsibility for decision making through the Project Manager.
  • Provide regular monitoring for quality, time schedules and project budget.
  • Identify and assign the best-qualified personnel to accomplish the task assignments.
  • Provide flexibility in staffing for response to project requirements.
  • Provide Project Principal Participation to assure allocation of resources, quality of work and effective communications.
  • Complete design assignments on time and within budget to meet client requirements.

Key Projects

TSA University of Phoenix Stadium

TSA CARDINALS MULTI PURPOSE FACILITY - Over the last few years EKA has had considerable involvement with the development of the $262 million TSA Cardinals Multi Purpose facility. We were first involved with the design of the site in Tempe and are the building civil engineers responsible for the design of the stadium facility in Glendale. For the project, EKA first provided the Mass Excavation package for the Stadium. This package called for clearing and site preparation of 68 acres of the 166-acre site and excavation and placement of roughly 800,000 cubic yards of material. It was important to complete Mass Excavation Plans and get the grading permit from the City of Glendale to allow earliest start of construction. This package also established the design parameters and horizontal location of the MSE retaining wall system that circles the stadium bowl. EKA prepared the Horizontal Gridline Control Plan for the layout and construction of the approximately 550 columns required for the project. Over the design and construction period, EKA has been involved in the programming efforts for the outboard field and hardscape, cost estimating and value engineering, the design document phase and construction administration of the project. EKA prepared the civil construction documents for the rollout field slab design and drainage design of the outboard field. Also included was the preparation of Division 2 specifications related to the work depicted on the civil plans. Included within the scope of the project is a future package that will address the Grading, Drainage and Paving plans for the plaza hardscape area. This project is a design build effort that requires coordination with the stadium design team located in offices around the country, coordination with the infrastructure design team under contract with the city, and coordination with the contractor. Limited construction administration services are also being provided to the contractor.

US Airways Center - (America West Arena)

AMERICA WEST ARENA - The project included design surveys and plans for relocation of existing utilities.  An early grading package was prepared as well as plans for grading, drainage, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water lines, fire lines and paving.  The firm completed all on-site and off-site civil engineering for this project.  The site preparation plans were completed for the City of Phoenix and the on-site plans were prepared in conjunction with the plans for the site completed for Ellerbe-Beckett.  Associated with the Suns Arena, EKA prepared design and construction documents to relocate a 42- inch water line and coordinated utility conflicts. The site was designed around the historic Sun Mercantile building.  The Jefferson Street realignment included field surveys, preparation of paving plans,  landscaping plans, phasing and detour plans, water line relocations , storm drainage and specialty landscape plans.

Camelback Esplanade

CAMELBACK ESPLANADE – This 22-acre master planned mixed-use commercial, retail and residential development is located in the center of the “Village Core” at the Southeast corner of 24th Street and Camelback Road in Phoenix, Arizona.  The development consists of five office buildings with approximately 1 million square feet, a retail component of 135, 000 square feet, a Ritz Carlton hotel of 230,000 square feet, condominium tower of 100,000 feet, a parking garage (3 levels below ground and 3 levels above ground) with a multi-screen movie theater.

Healthcare

EKA has provided Civil Engineering and Land Survey services for hospitals and other healthcare projects throughout Arizona for over 25 years.  Work on hospital campuses is a major part of our firm's practice.  We have participated in the design of both Greenfield Hospitals as well as major additions to existing hospitals taking several years to construct.  Because of this we are intimately familiar with the design and construction process for hospitals and with the major contractors involved in healthcare work.  Issues unique to healthcare work include the need to maintain 24 hour operations while constructing new facilities, planning of utility systems to allow future expansion and complex phasing and sequencing of work.  Our surveyors have extensive experience in the layout of multi story building additions and in preparing detailed topographic and utility surveys of hospital campuses.
